At ActiveCare Chiropractic we offer non-surgical spinal decompression therapy.

What Is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal Decompression is a non-surgical method used to increase the disc space between the segments of the spinal column. It is a type of motorized traction which works by stretching the spine. This eases any pressure on the discs, which contain a jelly like substance surrounded by a fibrous ring, and act as a cushion between the spinal segments. This then leads to improved range of motion and reduced pain caused by movement. Spinal decompression also allows the fluid to re-enter the disc after the disc has been herniated (slipped disc) which also allows for enhanced recovery using the body’s own natural healing process.

What Conditions / Symptoms Can Spinal Decompression Treat?

  • Neck pain which radiates into the arm(s)
  • Back Pain
  • Sciatica
  • Numbness in the hands or feet
  • Disc Bulges or Herniated Discs
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Irritated or “pinched’ nerves due to Degenerative Disc Disease

What Should I Expect From Spinal Decompression Treatments?

During Decompression, the patient is fully clothed, and is then fitted with harnesses around the pelvis and at the chest for lower back decompression, and with a harness around the forehead for neck decompression. At ActiveCare we prefer the patient to be facing up during the treatment. The doctor will then input information into the computer with each patient having a unique program based on the doctor’s judgements and the computers calculations. The process is also relatively painless with most patients reporting a “stretching sensation” in the targeted area of the spine. Treatment usually lasts between 15-30 minutes.
